Seibukan Jujutsu Sandan
Demonstration for my third degree blackbelt in Seibukan Jujutsu, an modern jujutsu system founded by Julio Toribio. The requirements are quite comprehensive in their scope. The test begins with ukemi (falling skills), then kata (prearranged techniques). Each black belt level in Seibukan has it’s own unique kata, so I performed each one back to back. Tai sabaki (getting off the line and defending as prearranged attacks are launched), is next, followed by reversals, tanto (knife defense), sword, jo (mid length staff) takeaways, jo kata , sword defense, sword kata, and katana waza (sword retention). Lastly, we enter a more improvisational phase, with a variety of henka (variations) of techniques allowed during the attacks. Henka is Seibukan’s equivalent to sparring. Isu no henka (or chair variations) was first, then going to hanmi handachi (you’re kneeling, they’re standing), then regular standing henka.
The test is challenging and you must be on point at all times. The total length of the test was around 50 minutes, but I’ve cut it down to a little over 5. As there are no competitions in Seibukan Jujutsu, these demonstrations serve to sharpen your training and focus on what is going to be demanded of you.
