InstructorsRoy Dean
At age 19 he began training in Aikikai Aikido under Kalvin Koshiyama, eventually serving as uchideshi (live in student) under Julio Toribio. By age 24, he had received his shodan in Aikikai Aikido, and Enshin Itto-Ryu Batto Jutsu (Iaido), as well as a sandan (third degree blackbelt) in Seibukan Jujutsu. Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began under Claudio Franca in 1997, where he received his blue belt. In 2000 he began training under Mr. Roy Harris in San Diego and was promoted to purple belt in 2002, brown belt in 2004, and the prestigious black belt in 2006. Mr. Dean served as a staff member under Mr. Harris from 2002 to 2006; led the progressive grappling program at Jiai Aikido, and instructed the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu recreation class at the University of California, San Diego. Dean has competed and won in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling competitions.
Jimmy DaSilva
Jimmy DaSilva is currently a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His training began under Nelson Monteiro and Marcelo Pereira in San Diego, California, receiving his blue belt under Mr. Harris in 2004. He earned his purple belt in the summer of 2007 in accordance with Harris International standards. In addition to his ground skills, Jimmy has a Muay Thai kickboxing background, is a certified Crossfit trainer, and has a deep appreciation of yoga.
Donald Bowerman
Donald is currently a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is an active competitor, recently capturing the gold medal in both the Oregon Open and SubLeague tournaments. Donald enjoys sharing his skills on Wednesday evenings at the Academy.
TJ Brodeur
TJ is currently a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and had previously trained in Aikido under the reknown T.K. Chiba. He is a US Navy Officer and enjoys Crossfit, music composition, and daunting physical challenges. TJ enjoys sharing his skills at the Academy on Saturday afternoons.
Rick Ellis
Rick is currently a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with previous training in Danzan Ryu Jujutsu under Kevin Colton. He is also an avid mountain biker, guitar player, and computer programmer. Rick enjoys sharing his skills at the Academy on Saturday afternoons.
Anthony Treas
Anthony Treas is currently a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His training began under Marcelo Alonzo in Seattle, Washington. He earned his blue belt in the summer of 2007 under Mr. Dean in accordance with Harris International standards. Anthony is also a Sergeant in the National Guard, and is currently serving his country in Iraq.
Neil Thompson
Neil is currently a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is an active competitor, with an aggressive guard and strong triangle choke. Neil enjoys sharing his skills on Friday evenings at the Academy. He also instructs the beginners class on Monday evenings.
James Malone
James is currently a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is an active competitor, with a history in weightlifting and soccer, including coaching youth soccer. He is also an accomplished chef. James enjoys sharing his skills during Monday’s lunch class.
