U2 and Your Personal Evolution

Last minute U2 tickets crossed my path this weekend, and being the fan that I am, I could not refuse. The last time I saw them was 14 years ago, on the Pop Mart tour in Oakland, California (6.18.97).
So much has happened in that time. Back then, I was living in a dojo in Monterey, California. I was poor. I had no credit card, and had to convince a friend in Alaska to charge it on his account. I was a white belt in BJJ.
Fast forward to the present, and progress has been made. I have a credit card, and the capacity to take the tickets. I’m a second degree black belt in BJJ.
U2 are still going strong. They continue to reinvent themselves. They believe in the future. They are more nuanced, more polished, and exciting in their live presentation. Bono’s voice is actually better now than it was back then.
So it can be with you. In 14 years from now, you can be more skilled than you can imagine in this moment. More capable. More strategic. More effective. Age gracefully, with an eye on your long term success. You will reinvent yourself several times, but you will still be you. Still touring the earth, sharing your talents, and discovering who you are. Pace yourself accordingly.
I was also in Monterey at that time (Jun 96 - Sep 97). I was studying a foreign language at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio while in the Air Force. I was also poor. BJJ did not exist in my mind yet.
My son’s and my BJJ journey began just 2.5 years ago when he was 10. It’s satisfying to look back at each year and see progress in something so difficult.
Your videos have helped. Thanks for the inspirational post.

Achtung Baby is still my favorite album, but I’m stoked that Bono figured his voice issues out. Looked like an amazing venue. I couldn’t agree more, pace IS everything.

Great post, Sensei. Only you could dig this kind of insight out of what most would view as a single evening of fun. Thank you for that.
