Aikido and BJJ Discussion Part 1

This off the cuff discussion is generating some interesting dialogues.  You can check out the Aikiweb response here, or the slightly less erudite reactions at Bullshido.  Several more talks on this subject are forthcoming.

  1. Good stuff Roy.  I remember early on having the same feeling of “lateness”.  I can’t tell you how many times it wold seem that people would go straight from passing my guard to having me locked down in side control.  As if they had teleported directly there.  As time goes on I see more and more space between the movements and those become opportunities for my movements.  Proper hand position, hipping away, blading the body and more.  All because of awareness.

    Jits is a beautiful thing…

  2. I think you started a war on Bullshido!!!! smile

You made some great points, as obviously evidenced by the amount of discussion it is generating on these posts.  As an Aikidoka-turned-BJJer, I look forward to more of these.

  3. Outstanding points, Roy!

All the concepts you address - fluid motion, acceptance of energy and re-direction, sensitivity, and timing - are present in both Aikido and Jiu-jitsu.  I personally have not taken Aikido (one day I will) but I find those same concepts time and time again in Jiu-jitsu.  It’s true.  As a small guy, I can’t be flat on my back, I need to be mobile.  If not I get smashed and passed way too easily with bigger, stronger, heavier guys.

Thanks for pointing these out and offering something unique, not only to the Aikido community, but for every one of us with a love for the martial arts.

    Keep up the good work!
