The last class of 2010 will be Wednesday, December 22.  Lunch class only, no evening class.  Robert Romo will be demonstrating for his blue belt.  Be there.

Monday, January 3rd will be the first class of 2011.  So many good things planned for next year, I can hardly stand it.

Happy Holidays to all!

Thanksgiving 2010

There will be no class on Thanksgiving Day or on Friday, November 26th.  Classes resume on Saturday.  In the meantime, give thanks for family and friends, and check out Ryron Gracie describing a friendly, explorative roll from BJJ Weekly.com.  This is a form of rolling that is incredibly valuable, yet is under utilized and often misunderstood.  It’s all about giving. Study on this.

Ode to Burr Richards

As usual, Burr Richards lends a hand during the construction of the Academy

Last week, Burr Richards sent me a letter I knew one day would come, but didn’t want to receive.

He gently informed me, as a warrior in his sixties, that his body had told him his jiu jitsu run was over.

It was his goal to end his martial arts career as a white belt, just as it began.

His years of Karate training showed him the world of martial arts, and jiu jitsu was a late in life discovery.

I am honored to have been the one to show him this way, this path, this art.

His wisdom, humor, and good nature will be missed on our mats.

The seasoned warrior shows us the way, as they have already lived it.

Catch a big fish for us on the John Day!  You’ll always be a part of this family.

Neil Thompson: BJJ Blue Belt

Congratulations to Neil Thompson for a slick blue belt demonstration!  Beautiful triangles and armlocks in this one.  Filmed by Steve Burke, edited by Glen Farris.

Brian Dunagan:  BJJ Blue Belt

Congratulations to Brian Dunagan on his fantastic blue belt demonstration! Brian and Neil have begun regularly drilling as training partners, their progress has been phenomenal.

This particular video marks a new era in the Academy.  I have done so many videos and demonstrations that I no longer felt the creative impulse driving me.  So, I tapped on Glen Farris to become the official Academy editor, and I think he did an excellent job with this test.  Neil Thompson’s test should be up shortly, as well as their competition footage.  Also interesting to note that other schools are posting blue belt tests too, including the highly skilled Brandon Quick of Dallas/Fort Worth 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu (Eddie Bravo), Mike Cusi’s Stronghold Gym (Roy Harris), and Scott Smith of Spencer County Martial Arts (Pedro Sauer).

Congratulations to Brian Dunagan and Neil Thompson!  Both look very composed and calm during in their first submission grappling competition, and represented RDA well with sportsmanship and serious skills.  Each had 3 matches, and each had 2 crisp submissions.  Thanks to all that came out and supported.  You can take a look at the action yourself right here.  Thanks to Rick for the expert photography.  Bravo gentleman!
