Florida Reflections

Florida was perfect.  It was a relaxing and much needed trip to Naples, to soak up the sun, visit some friends, and do a little bit of teaching.  October was a busy month.

Hanging out with my good friend Rick Ellis was therapeutic for the soul.  He knows me well, and we discussed the new direction I’m looking to take the Academy in.  To launch an organization is one thing, but to have it expand in a scalable manner, while maintaining high standards is a totally different trick.  I am re-examining everything, top to bottom, and re-inventing along the way.  It is simply evolution.  To have this new, larger space brimming with life, to have both students and instructors feel empowered and genuinely connected to the whole is the aim.  I can do what I’ve been doing in a better way, and I am consumed with learning how.  I haven’t read this many books on leadership and business since launching RDA 5 years ago.

I was fortunate to do an in house seminar for the Lewis BJJ Academy.  A year and a half ago, I stopped by Naples to do a little teaching at an ATA school and met BJJ black belt Trent Lewis. Shortly afterwards, Trent was asked by the school owner to lead a BJJ class, and his Academy was born.  Less than two years old, and what a difference.  Trent guided several dedicated students to blue belt, and also has attracted several upper belts to his organization.  Launching that first generation of students is some of the hardest work there is on the BJJ journey.  Good things are happening there.  I look forward to returning to Naples in the near future, and keeping connected with their progress.
