Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't find the answer to your question below, please contact us.

Q: Is it possible to earn rank under you through your DVDs?

The short answer is no.

Only affiliates and direct students are able to be awarded belts.  Blue Belt Requirements has helped many people around the world earn that first rank under their local instructors, and it should be used in combination with other sources to gain an understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu basics.

Q: Do you and your students compete?

I am retired from competition and my focus is on teaching. However, I have competed and won in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling tournaments, from blue belt to black belt. All my victories have been by submission, and I encourage those that train under me to finish the fight.

I do not require my students to compete, however, I will coach them if they wish to have that experience. Only blue belts and above may compete for the Academy.

Q: I’d like to come visit. What do I need to know?

We love having visitors, whether you’re a beginner or black belt.

You’ll want to fly into the Redmond/Bend (RDM) airport. We recommend renting a car for the 25 minute drive from the airport to downtown Bend.

Accommodations are plentiful, and can range from a downtown experience at the Oxford Hotel or Phoenix Inn, to the zen seclusion of Five Pine Lodge or Seventh Mountain Resort.

Visitor rates are $20 a class, and a weeklong pass is available for $100. We currently do not have an uchideshi (live in student) program, but are well suited for those looking to commit to daily training.

Q: Are you available for seminars?

Of course. Please send inquiries to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Q: I have your app but can’t hear the audio!

For iPhone:

The switch on the upper left side is used to turn the ringer off of the phone and also as a mute button for apps.  Moving this switch to the forward position will enable the sound.

For iPad:

Please try the following two options.

The sliding switch on the upper right side can either be assigned as a mute button or to lock rotation.

By default it is assigned as a mute button.  If you have not re-assigned it to lock rotation, please make sure that the button is in it’s uppermost position.  You should see confirmation that the device is no longer muted.

If you have re-assigned the switch to lock rotation, please double-click the home button on the face of the device.  This will open the multi-task bar at the bottom.  Please swipe to the left until you see the play buttons.  The mute button will be on the far left, which you can deselect.
